DIMAPUR, JUL 9 (NPN): The Lt. Z. Sukavi Achumi Memorial Open Chess Championship 2026 got underway on July 9 with an inaugural programme attended by players, parents and well-wishers.
A tribute to the late Z. Sukavi Achumi was delivered by Sümi Hoho vice-president Otova Swu, who recalled Achumi’s vision, leadership qualities and ability to think beyond conventional ideas. He also spoke on the enduring legacy left behind by his late friend.
Assistant Professor Phek Government College, Nivi Achumi shared a personal reflection on her father, highlighting his values, guidance and lasting influence.
The inaugural programme also featured a special musical performance by siblings Senti and Hopong, who entertained the gathering with a melodious presentation.
A total of 66 players, comprising both young and experienced competitors, are participating in the championship. Among the notable participants are some of Nagaland’s leading chess players, including Kevilekho Zumvu, Melesai Dawhuo, Mughaho Awomi and Salhuto Nyekha. The tournament is expected to provide a competitive platform for players across different age groups while promoting the game of chess in the State.
The programme was hosted by Bonikali Awomi, while the invocation was delivered by Children’s Pastor of Mishikito Baptist Church Niboli Shohe.
