“Detective Meter Down”, a 30-minute short film written by Lucknow’s Ghazal Javed and directed by Devansh Agarwal, has won the Best Short Film award at the Indisches Filmfestival Stuttgart, one of Europe’s leading festivals dedicated to Indian cinema.
The award was presented on Tuesday, Javed told PTI.
The detective comedy follows Rajesh Yadav, an autorickshaw driver from Bihar who moves to Mumbai with dreams of becoming a detective. Through the protagonist’s journey, the film explores the lives, aspirations and struggles of migrants in the country’s financial capital with a blend of humour and emotion.
“Mumbai’s autorickshaw drivers are mostly migrants from other states. We felt every migrant has a story. Through Rajesh, we have tried to capture the emotions and aspirations of everyone chasing their dreams in Mumbai,” Javed said.
She said the idea behind the film was to place a person from a marginalised section of society at the centre of the story.
“I wanted to present someone from the margins as the hero because such characters are usually portrayed only through their helplessness and are rarely shown as protagonists,” she said.
According to Javed, the film conveys the message that every individual has value and a unique place in the world.
“ Detective Meter Down” marks Javed’s debut as a short film writer. She is the granddaughter of noted Lucknow-based writer and freedom fighter Shakeel Siddiqui.
The Indisches Filmfestival Stuttgart, held annually since 2004, is among Europe’s largest festivals showcasing Indian cinema. Besides Bollywood productions, it features regional Indian films, parallel cinema, documentaries and short films, with awards presented in categories including Best Feature Film, Best Short Film, Best Documentary, Director’s Vision Award and Audience Award.
