LVC seeks probe into alleged attack

DIMAPUR: Longtsunger Village Citizens (LVC) has alleged that the October 10 violence in the village was a pre-planned attack by armed intruders from Kiusam area, and called for a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident.
In a statement, LVC claimed that villagers were going about their daily activities peacefully when the alleged intruders, reportedly carrying sophisticated weapons, entered the village and targeted the residence of the village council chairman, damaging his property. It further alleged that residential structures and public properties were set on fire and that the attackers opened fire with heavy firearms.
According to LVC, local residents confronted the alleged intruders in an attempt to protect their lives and land, leading to a violent clash. One person identified by the organisation as an alleged intruder was shot dead, while others sustained injuries. The deceased was later taken by the civil administration, it stated.
LVC condemned what it described as the mobilisation of an armed mob against a peaceful village and called for an impartial inquiry into the violence, property destruction and circumstances leading to the incident.
It also expressed concern over the alleged dereliction of duty by nine Village Guards assigned to protect Longtsunger. It alleged that the personnel deserted their posts and absconded with government-issued weapons.
LVC demanded government intervention, a thorough inquiry and appropriate action against the personnel concerned in accordance with the law.
While expressing sorrow over the incident and its consequences, LVC urged the authorities to ensure justice, maintain peace and take measures to prevent further violence.
It also cautioned against any further intrusion or unlawful entry that could threaten the peace, rights and territorial integrity of the village, and called upon all concerned to respect the rule of law and refrain from actions that could escalate tensions.
