CHENNAI, MAY 9 (IANS): The Madras High Court will hear on Sunday an urgent petition filed by former Tamil Nadu minister and DMK leader K.R. Periyakaruppan seeking to restrain Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam MLA-elect Srinivasa Sethupathi from taking oath after his one-vote victory in the Assembly elections.
The case, to be heard by the vacation bench of Justices L. Victoria Gowri and N. Senthilkumar, relates to the Tiruppathur constituency in Sivaganga district, where Sethupathi secured 83,365 votes against Periyakaruppan’s 83,364. Alleging irregularities in counting, Periyakaruppan sought a recount and an interim stay on Sethupathi assuming office until the dispute is resolved.
He claimed some postal ballots belonging to Tiruppathur constituency in Sivaganga district were mistakenly transferred to another Tirupathur constituency. The petitioner also urged the court to direct the Election Commission to produce video footage related to the recount verification process.
The matter drew statewide attention over the razor-thin election margin.
