Major fire guts 9 shops in Mokokchung town

A major fire broke out in the heart of Mokokchung town on Tuesday afternoon near the Mokokchung Municipal Council shopping complex in Dilong ward, gutting nine shops and damaging five others.
According to officials, three buildings were affected in the incident. One kacha structure was completely destroyed, while another building housing four shops and a third building with five rooms were also gutted. The outer wall of an adjacent building was partially damaged.
Officer-in-Charge of Fire & Emergency Services Mokokchung, Keleseho Stephen, said the station received a call at 12:36 pm, following which fire tenders were immediately pressed into service. A total of four tenders were deployed, making multiple trips to contain the blaze.
The fire was brought under control around 2:50 pm. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained and is under investigation. No casualties were reported, while assessment of damage and losses was underway.
