Former Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh accompanied by at least three BJP MLAs left Imphal for New Delhi on Saturday in their latest efforts to reinstate popular government in the state.
Singh accompanied by at least three BJP MLAs – Sapam Ranjan Singh and Heikham Dingo Singh and Tongbram Robindro Singh – left Imphal for Delhi by an Indigo flight this afternoon, around 2.45 pm.
Another party MLA L Shusildro also left for Delhi today from Assam’s capital Guwahati where he reached on the previous day.
The troubled Manipur is currently under President’s Rule after placing the state Assembly under suspended animation.
The President’s Rule, which was first imposed on February 13, 2025 following resignation by then chief minister N Biren Singh, was extended until at least February 2026.
Since President’s Rule was imposed, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies have been making efforts to reinstall a popular government in Manipur.
After months of silence, the matter of reinstatement of the popular government re-surfaced when former chief minister N Biren Singh told reporters at Imphal Airport, before departing for New Delhi, that his visit aimed to meet Central leaders to press for early reinstallation of a popular government in the state. “We are going to press the Central leaders for early restoration of a popular government so that the prevailing unrest situation in the state, including the issues concerning highways, internally displaced persons (IDPs) etc. can be ended,” the former chief minister said.
MLA T Robindro Singh said that they were planning to meet Central leaders without giving any detail regarding with whom they are going to meet.
However, sources in the BJP and familiar with the development said that the MLAs will seek an appointment with Union home minister Amit Shah, while meeting BJP northeast in-charge Sambit Patra on their arrival at the national capital.
As per the sources, more MLAs. including Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, Govindas Konthoujam and K Robindro, S Kunjakeshwor, Th Shyamkumar, and Karam Shyam, are likely to dash to Delhi on Sunday.
Some of the party MLAs had already reached Delhi earlier on Friday.
The trip to Delhi came after a series of meetings amongst the BJP MLAs, another source disclosed, adding that so far no appointments in particular to meet the Prime Minister or the Union home minister were confirmed.
Notably, state Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla is also currently in Delhi. In the national capital, the state Governor who is also looking after the additional charge of Nagaland called on Vice-President CP Radhakrishnan at the Vice-President’s Enclave, New Delhi on Friday.
