Almost all BJP MLAs from Manipur have left for New Delhi after the party’s high command invited them to attend a meeting scheduled for Sunday, December 14.
According to reports, the intimation was conveyed through state BJP president A. Sarda Devi, who had rushed to Delhi on Friday following the invitation. The meeting is expected to include MLAs from different communities, including those belonging to the Kuki tribe. While the agenda remains unclear, the development has triggered speculation about the possible re-installation of a popular government in the state. Manipur has been under President’s Rule since February 13, 2025, following the resignation of the former chief minister. The state assembly remains suspended, with administration under the direct control of the President of India. Parliament extended President’s Rule for another six months from August 13, 2025, until February 13, 2026. Amid the speculation, at least ten BJP MLAs, including former chief minister N. Biren Singh and Speaker Th. Satyabrata Singh, left Imphal for Delhi on Saturday. Party sources said several MLAs were already in the national capital for personal reasons and would join the meeting.
Speaking to reporters at Imphal Airport before departure, Biren Singh said, “I believe we are being invited to discuss the state’s current situation. Who knows, it may be related to government formation.” He added, “We have no confirmation. Let’s see. I am expecting positive things for a better Manipur. I hope some positive decision will be taken.”
Speaker Th. Satyabrata Singh also said he had no knowledge of the agenda but was attending in response to the invitation. “I heard all of them (MLAs) have been asked to come. Will inform you what happened,” he remarked.
Other MLAs, including Kh. Joykishan Singh, RK Imo Singh and Yumnam Khemchand, echoed similar uncertainty, stating that the purpose of the meeting would only be known in Delhi. Khemchand, who has been vocal against Biren Singh, stressed that restoring peace in Manipur must remain a priority. “Any political decision must consider ongoing tensions and instability in the state,” he said.
The BJP currently has 37 MLAs in the 60-member Manipur Legislative Assembly.
