Manipur chief minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Monday convened a meeting with NDA legislators at the chief minister’s secretariat to deliberate on critical governance and security concerns amidst the state’s ongoing unrest.
The meeting was attended by deputy chief minister Losii Dikho along with around 18 MLAs from the BJP and its ruling allies. Official sources said discussions centered on adopting coordinated measures to restore peace and normalcy, while reaffirming the government’s commitment to public safety and people-centric governance.
In a statement shared on his social media handles, the chief minister noted that the deliberations focused on pressing issues of governance and administration, with a clear resolve for decisive and coordinated action at all levels. “The government stands unwavering in its duty to protect the safety and welfare of every citizen,” he wrote, adding, “We are committed to ensuring that peace, prosperity, and sustained progress are delivered to all, guided by the core principles of people-centric governance.”
The meeting came against the backdrop of mass agitations across the valley districts and escalating tensions in Ukhrul following recent violent incidents that claimed seven lives. Protesters in the valley have been demanding justice and accountability for the killing of two children in an RPG attack and the subsequent deaths of three youths in CRPF firing at Tronglaobi in Bishnupur district on April 7, as well as two civilians killed in an ambush along NH-202 in Ukhrul district on April 18. With tensions running high, an indefinite curfew has been in place across the five valley districts since April 7 evening, though it has been relaxed during daytime hours from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. in recent days.
