Manipur DGP reviews security measures for farmers in vulnerable areas

Correspondent

IMPHAL, JUN 29: Manipur Director General of Police (DGP) Mukesh Singh on Monday reviewed security preparedness in vulnerable farming areas of Kakching and Chandel districts to ensure the safety of farmers during the ongoing cultivation season.
With the onset of the farming season, the state government has stepped up security measures in vulnerable areas located along the valley-hill interface, where farmers have remained exposed to attacks since the ethnic violence erupted in May 2023. Several farmers have been killed in attacks by armed miscreants while working in their fields over the past two years.
Accompanied by Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), the DGP visited Kakching district, the headquarters of the 8th MR at Leikun in Chandel district, and the Chandel district headquarters to review security arrangements, policing and departmental welfare.
At Kakching, Singh assessed the preparedness of the district police to prevent any untoward incidents in vulnerable farming areas. During an interaction with officers of the district police, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and central agencies, he stressed the need for effective investigation, speedy disposal of cases, sustained operations against anti-national elements and drug traffickers, and intensified efforts to recover illegal arms and ammunition.
The DGP assured that officers and personnel demonstrating exemplary professionalism would be suitably rewarded. He also appreciated the Kakching district police’s cycle patrol initiative, describing it as an effective model of beat policing, and interacted with representatives of various civil society organisations (CSOs). At the 8th MR headquarters in Leikun, Singh chaired a review meeting on deployment at posts and outposts, static guards and law-and-order duties. He emphasised professionalism, discipline and healthy work practices while encouraging personnel to maintain harmony within the unit. He also urged officers to explore innovative ways to utilise the unit’s land and other resources for departmental welfare.
During his visit to Chandel district, the DGP inaugurated a newly renovated conference hall at the office of the Superintendent of Police and a newly established cyber cell aimed at strengthening cybercrime investigation and modernising policing infrastructure.
He later held interaction sessions with officers of the Chandel district police, representatives of CSOs and the Assam Rifles. Reviewing policing issues, Singh emphasised professional and people-centric policing, appreciated the coordination between the district police and civil society organisations in maintaining peace and harmony, and underscored the importance of continued inter-agency cooperation.
The DGP also encouraged the youth of Chandel district to participate in the forthcoming recruitment rally for the Manipur Police.
