IMPHAL, Sep 4: Director General of Manipur police Mukesh Singh on Friday conducted a field visit to violent affected villages in Manipur’s Ukhrul district.
Accompanied by the ADGP (law & order) and top police officials of the district, the DGP visited the Leplen, Sinakeithei and Litan areas of and reviewed prevailing ground conditions and inspected security arrangements in and around the villages.
The DGP held extensive interactive sessions with field commanders of deployed forces including Manipur police, 6th Manipur Rifles, Border Security Force (BSF) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
He also interacted with village authority members regarding their security concerns, the Manipur police said, in a statement.
The DGP’s visit reinforced active command oversight in the Leplen, Sinakeithei and Litan areas, ensuring that combined forces remain strategically positioned and are proactive in protecting the local populace, the statement added.
Leplen, Sinakeithei, and Litan where the DGP visited on Friday are villagers in Ukhrul bordering Saikul sub-division of Kangpokpi that have experienced heightened ethnic tensions and armed clashes after the unfolding of the renewed Naga-Kuki conflict.
Among the villages the DGP visited, Sinakeithei is a Tangkhul Naga village that has reported multiple violent incidents, including arson of houses and heavy exchanges of gunfire involving armed groups.
Leplen is a Kuki inhabited area of Ukhrul district bordering Kangpokpi district where clashes and crossfire have frequently been reported since the outbreak of the renewed conflict.
Litan village is along the Imphal–Ukhrul highway with a mixed demographic setting of Tangkhul (Naga) and Kuki, which has witnessed intermittent automatic weapon firing, blockades, and rising community friction between Tangkhul and Kuki.
Notably, the Litan area of Ukhrul district is considered to be the epicenter of the renewed violence between the Naga and the tribes in the hills of the state.
The tensions ignited in February last following an assault in the Litan area of Ukhrul district and quickly spread across the hill regions.
The incident that was described as “drunken brawl,” on February 7, 2026, was followed by arson and destruction of over 20 houses, including government quarters in Litan on the night of February 8 night.
While the incident led to the spread of the violence in Ukhrul and its adjoining Kamjong district, an ambush incident in Kangpokpi in which three Thadou church leaders and a driver were killed marked the escalation of the violent conflict.
