CorrespondentIMPHAL, Jun 16

Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Balla on Monday reviewed enhanced preparedness amid rising concerns of a possible Covid-19 resurgence in the state.
Manipur has been witnessing a significant surge in the positive cases of the contagious disease after the first Covid-19 positive case was confirmed on June 1 last.
Amid the signs of a fresh resurgence of the contagion, the positive cases increased to 20 on Monday with seven new cases confirmed in the last 24 hours.
According to the Covid-19 status update of the state health authority, five new cases were confirmed in Imphal West and one each in Thoubal and Kakching district.
The seven new cases were detected upon testing of 16 samples in the last 24 hours, taking the cumulative number of samples tested since June 1 in the state to 82.
After one patient discharged today upon recovery, the state currently has 19 active cases and 16 of them were in home isolation, the status update saw.
Amid these signs of a fresh COVID-19 resurgence in Manipur, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla chaired a high-level review meeting with senior officials and medical experts to assess the state’s preparedness and response strategy.
The Governor chaired the review meeting in view of the recent surge in the positive cases of the contagious disease and in line with a recent directive from the Union ministry of health and family welfare (MoHFW) in the wake of recent notable increase in Covid-19 cases in India.
India is once again grappling with a notable increase in Covid-19 cases, with the Union health ministry reporting a rise in active infections to 7,400 as of June 15, 2025.
Amid rising concerns of a possible COVID-19 resurgence, the ministry recently directed the states and Union Territories to enhance preparedness to combat the spread of the contiguous disease.
During the review meeting held at Imphal Raj Bhavan, officials of the state health department briefed the Governor on the state’s preparedness, including diagnostics, protective equipment, oxygen supply, ICU and isolation wards, essential drugs, and the IDSP–IHIP portal.
Challenges related to testing capacity, medical supplies and hospital readiness were also discussed, Raj Bhavan said in a release.
The Governor advised the importance of proactive measures, adequate medical infrastructure, and community awareness to ensure the state remains equipped to handle any potential surge in Covid cases, the Raj Bhavan stated.
Emphasizing proactive planning and public awareness, he urged all departments to remain vigilant and strengthen response mechanisms to tackle any possible resurgence, it added.
