Manipur Police convoy attacked in Chandel

CorrespondentIMPHAL, Oct 2

A mob attacked a police team in Manipur’s hill district of Chandel on Wednesday night, damaging some police vehicles, including that of the additional SP of the district.
No injury was reported on the part of the police personnel in the incident that occurred around 9.30 pm at Longja village under Chakpikarong police station of Chandel district.
Reports said that the police team was at the village to conduct a search operation based on specific inputs regarding movement of illegal drugs and weapons in the area.
When the police team led by an additional SP of the district was about to conduct the operation, a large number of villagers with womenfolk in the frontline prevented them from entering the village by blocking the road.
While police officers were trying to convince the villagers, stones were pelted towards the police while some of them smashed the windshields of the police vehicles with sticks and other deadly objects.
While the police personnel could do nothing in retaliation as they were outnumbered, Central security forces, including the Assam Rifles from nearby security posts, rushed to the area and swung into action to prevent the crowd from causing harm to the police officers and personnel.
After hours of struggle, the police team retreated from the area and reached the district headquarters around 3am unharmed, the reports said.
Meanwhile, United Kuki Liberation Front (UKLF), a militant under suspension of operation truce with the government, alleged the Chandel district police raided a house of one of the group’s officers on Wednesday night.
The UKLF vehemently condemned the “arrogant act of Chandel SP Dharmendra Kumar and his team for raiding the resident of a UKLF officer at M Gamnom village in Sajik Tampak area of Chandel district on October 1 evening, a statement issued by one T James of its ministry of information and publicity stated.
In a statement, the group termed the raid against the officers and cadres of the organisation who signed the tripartite suspension of operation (SoO) agreement as a total violation of SoO ground rules.
“Since, signing of the SoO agreement, UKLF strictly abided by the ground rules and worked dedicatedly towards achieving a political solution for the Kuki-Zo people.
As such, UKLF viewed the recent unwanted act of SP Chandel and his team seriously and will not remain a mute spectator if he continues to act arrogantly,” the statement read.
The organization appealed to the concerned authority to take up an exemplary action against the SP Chandel so that such incident does not recur in the near future.
