Manipur Police have detained a 23-year-old man from Imphal East district for allegedly running a Facebook account that posted inflammatory content, including threats and appeals that risked stirring communal unrest in the restive state.
The arrested individual has been identified as Tensubam Lamyanba Meitei, also known by slight variations in spelling. He is reportedly associated with the Arambai Tenggol group. The Facebook page in question, titled “Meitei Nongsa Lamyanba” (with minor spelling differences noted across reports), carried material that authorities say had the potential to disturb public peace and harmony.
According to police officials, the posts contained direct threats and calls that could have escalated tensions. The arrest followed a formal complaint and a swift investigation into the online activity. The probe is still underway, with further action likely depending on the evidence collected.
In an official statement, Manipur Police made it clear they will not tolerate the misuse of social media to spread hate or provoke violence. They warned that strict legal measures would be taken against anyone — individual or group — found inciting unrest either online or on the ground.
The development comes at a time when the state continues to grapple with complex ethnic and security challenges. Law enforcement agencies have intensified monitoring of digital platforms to prevent small sparks from turning into larger conflagrations. Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or inflammatory content promptly to the authorities.
