Manipur Valley, Naga Areas Paralyzed by Shutdowns Over Civilian Killings

Life in Manipur’s Imphal valley was brought to a standstill on Sunday as Meira Paibis and Civil Society Organisations enforced a five-day shutdown to protest the killing of two minors in Bishnupur district. Roads were deserted, shops and businesses closed, and vehicles stayed off the streets as women protesters blocked movement. The Joint Action Committee set April 25 as the deadline for arresting those responsible, intensifying public outrage.

Meanwhile, the United Naga Council announced a separate three-day shutdown across Naga areas after two civilians, including a retired Army personnel, were killed in Ukhrul district. The UNC said the shutdown would last until April 23, suspending all activities except emergency services, and a candlelight vigil would be held to honour the victims. At the same time, COCOMI accused security forces of excessive force and criticised Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh for failing to contain escalating violence.
