Mass funeral held for Mon landslide victims; search called off after six days

DIMAPUR: After six consecutive days of search operations, the rescue team was unable to retrieve the bodies of two persons among the eight who perished in the landslide at Defence Colony, Mon, on July 19. The operation was officially called off on July 24.
According to DIPR report, a mass funeral service for the two missing persons was held on July 25 at Thamnan Ward, Mon Town, in the presence of advisor Wangpang Konyak; Deputy Commissioner Mon, Wennyei Konyak; Superintendent of Police Mon, Kanchan Kumar Kandpal; representatives of Konyak Union, Konyak Students’ Union, Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong, villagers, family members and ward members.
Speaking on behalf of the district administration, the DC conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and acknowledged the tireless efforts made to retrieve the missing bodies. He expressed gratitude to the nine elected members of Mon district and Rajya Sabha MP Phangnon Konyak for their financial and moral support. He also thanked NGOs led by KU and KSU, officers and officials from various departments, and volunteers for their cooperation and sacrifices during the six day search operation.
Representatives from Konyak Union, Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong, Konyak Students’ Union, Thamnan Ward, villages and family members also delivered short speeches during the service.
