A massive forest that fire broke out near Tseminyu town Thursday afternoon, causing extensive damage to plantations and farmland was contained. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported.
Rengma Selo Zi (RSZ) president Kegwayhun Tep said that the swift and coordinated response of youth volunteers from Tseminyu village, T. Zisunyu, and Tseminyu town, successfully contained the fire before reaching the town. Their tireless efforts played a crucial role in averting what could have been a major disaster, he said.
While personnel from the Fire & Emergency Services were present at the site, they were reportedly unable to bring the fire under control in time due to the sheer scale of the blaze. It was learnt that though the Fire & Emergency Services station was nearing completion in Tseminyu; however, the office was yet to be made operational for public service.
Given that the practice of jhum cultivation in the region makes the district particularly vulnerable to forest fires, RSZ strongly emphasizes the urgent need to establish and operationalize a full-fledged Fire & Emergency Services office in Tseminyu.
On behalf of the citizens of Tseminyu, RSZ earnestly appealed to the government and the Fire department to expedite the process of setting up the office. RSZ said this is essential for ensuring the safety of the environment, the wellbeing of the citizens, and the protection of their properties.
