MCCI asks members not to entertain tax collection by ‘unwanted elements’

Alleging that some cadres and functionaries of “various Naga nationalist groups” were demanding money from members of the business community at Mokokchung town, the Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) has directed its members not to entertain “such unwanted elements”.
In a press release, MCCI president Tsukti Longkumer stated that multiple groups/factions have made the demands during the last few days.
MCCI reiterated that collection of donations, taxation or any form of transaction was not permissible by law. It stated that coercing or victimizing its members would not be tolerated. The chamber said that members of the business community under its ambits would not entertain them whatsoever. “Mokokchung town is the most peaceful major urban centre in Nagaland as of today and this hard-earned peace is too dear to us to be trampled on by some devious elements,” MCCI president said.
Further, MCCI has asked those groups trying to extort from the business community of Mokokchung town “to immediately cease and desist.”
The chamber also directed its members to immediately report to MCCI office of movements of any suspected extortionists in the market.
MCCI cautioned that any member of the business community entertaining such unwanted elements by ignoring its call would be doing so at their own risk.
