CorrespondentTURA (SHILLONG), NOV 7

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Friday laid the foundation stone for the construction and beautification of the historic Cenotaph in Tura, West Garo Hills district. The Cenotaph stands as a memorial honoring the sacrifices of the Garo Labour Corps who served during World War I. The project aims to preserve and enhance this historic site, ensuring it continues to serve as a place of remembrance, pride, and reflection for the people of Garo Hills.
Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Sangma highlighted the significance of the Babupara Cenotaph for the people of Garo Hills and welcomed the families of the Garo Labour Corps.
He emphasized that upon completion, the Cenotaph will formally honor all members of the Garo Labour Corps who served during World War I.
Sangma also urged the Committee for the Preservation of Garo Culture and Heritage to engage with the families of the Garo Labour Corps to document their history and contributions. He expressed gratitude to the committee, chaired by Minister Marcuise N. Marak, along with religious leaders, senior citizens, and members of civil society, for their extensive deliberations and efforts in shaping the construction and beautification of the Cenotaph.
Commenting on the design, Sangma said, “The new design is simple yet dignified. Visitors to the Cenotaph will experience the depth and seriousness of this historic memorial.”
He also recommended leveraging modern technology to provide visitors with information about the site and its history.
The Garo Labour Corps, recruited in 1917 by the British, included approximately 500 Garos who contributed as labourers in the 69th Labour Corps, aiding the Allies in road construction and transportation during World War I.
The Corps served in Puisieux, France, and later participated in salvage work at Bucquoy before being stationed at La Chapellette and Brussels.
