The Meghalaya government has been cooperating with the Assam government in the run-up to assembly elections in the neighbouring state.
Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home Prestone Tynsong said that all deputy commissioners, especially in the border areas have been asked to keep in contact with the Assam counterparts.
“ Meghalaya would ensure peaceful situation along the inter-state boundary areas during the Assam elections,” Tynsong assured.
“We will ensure that people of our state are safe, are peaceful and security will always be there,” he added.
On the other hand, West Khasi Hills deputy commissioner, Hema Nayak, said that officials from the district had an meeting with officials of Kamrup Rural district in Assam to sort out cooperative measures ahead of the Assam polls. A coordination meeting was near the Assam–Meghalaya boundary at Lumpi to discuss measures to ensure peace in these areas for smooth conduct of the Assam assembly elections. Langpih, also known as Lumpi, remains one of the long-standing disputed locations between the two states, with both sides claiming administrative jurisdiction pending a final settlement.
“The meeting went very well and we discussed many things regarding Assam election co-ordination. Election routine meetings we have been doing over many years and elections have been very peaceful in the border areas, be it Assam or Meghalaya side,” she said.
“This time also we will be offering full co-operation and co-ordination from West Khasi Hills side to the Kamrup (Rural) district administration. We have requested DC Kamrup (Rural) to give us the movement plan of polling stations in the border area so that we will co-ordinate with the ‘thanas’ of Assam side,” Nayak stated.
Elections to the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly are scheduled for April 9, with counting of votes set for May 4.
