Meghalaya is now the second fastest-growing economy in the country after Tamil Nadu, with consistent growth averaging 10 per cent per year over the last three years, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said on Wednesday. I
naugurating the Nongkharai Presbyterian Higher Secondary School, Umsohpieng village in remote West Khasi Hills district, Sangma said the government’s focus on welfare, infrastructure development and human resource development. He said that the state government’s significant investment in education, noting that Rs. 3,654 crores have been allocated to the sector, alongside grants-in-aid and other support.
The Chief Minister said that the government is bringing reforms in the education system, including a structured salary system for ad hoc and SSA teachers, aimed at strengthening the system over the next 10–20 years and ensuring efficient delivery of education.
Emphasising youth development, the Chief Minister encouraged parents, teachers, and communities to guide young people towards constructive pursuits through sports, music, entrepreneurship, and social programmes. He also announced a contribution from the Chief Minister’s Special Grant Fund to provide musical instruments for students of Sijun Memorial School and Nongkharai Presbyterian Higher Secondary School, highlighting the role of music in brain development and nurturing creativity.
