DIMAPUR, SEP 9 (NPN): The 173 Battalion Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India (SAI), kicked off the Men’s Open Volleyball Tournament under the banner of Sports for Peace and Development Across Nations (SPANDAN) at Transit Camp CRPF near DC Court, Dimapur on September 9.
A total of 22 volleyball teams from Nagaland and nearby areas are competing in the tournament, which aims to promote youth participation in sports, peace, unity and inclusive development. Alongside, the battalion is also hosting a Badminton Tournament for men and women at CIHSR, 4th Mile, with athletes from across the state taking part.
The inaugural volleyball match between 711 and Ignite Spikers set an energetic tone, with players displaying enthusiasm, confidence, teamwork and sportsmanship.
The opening ceremony was graced by Commandant, 173 Bn CRPF, Ashok Kumar Yadav, as the chief guest, along with officers of the battalion, representatives of SAI, coaches, officials, participating teams and sports enthusiasts.
Addressing the gathering, the chief guest emphasised the vital role of youth in nation-building and highlighted the contributions of athletes across education, science, sports, public service, security and administration. He noted that active participation in sports fosters confidence, discipline, leadership, teamwork and determination, while also uniting people beyond social, cultural and regional differences.
Commandant Ashok Kumar Yadav expressed confidence that the initiative would inspire more young people to pursue sports and contribute towards building a strong, united and progressive nation.
The organisers reiterated that SPANDAN seeks to use sports as a medium to foster peace, friendship, harmony and development. The tournament will continue until September 11, at the same venue.
