Advisor to chief minister and chairman of IDAN, Abu Metha has been formally designated as the ambassador of St. Joseph Palliative Care Nagaland in a ceremony held on November 23.
According to a DIPR report, expressing his gratitude, Metha acknowledged the privilege and honour of undertaking this role. He emphasized the significance of the challenge ahead and thanked the Catholic community for entrusting him with this responsibility. Metha called for collective efforts in serving the community, fostering an environment of generosity and charity.
Highlighting the Catholic community’s pivotal role in education and healthcare in Nagaland, Metha urged the Naga society to appreciate their contributions. He said that, in Naga society, successful sons and daughters are from Catholic institutions and, lots of Naga students are getting exposure through the far reach and engagement the Catholics have.
Bishop of Kohima & chairman/president of St. Joseph Pain & Palliative Care Centre, Rev. Dr. James Thoppil, defined the Care Centre as a multidisciplinary medical specialty aiming to enhance the quality of life for individuals facing serious or life-threatening illnesses. “It encompasses emotional, physical, and spiritual needs, considering the well-being of both the patient and their family”, he added.
The St. Joseph Palliative Care Centre, inaugurated by chief minister Neiphiu Rio on April 24, 2022, was constructed with support from the Italian Bishops Conference and local resources. The centre’s services focus on a five-pronged approach, including comprehensive inpatient care, home care, family member training for terminally ill patients, skill-building for primary caregivers, and awareness initiatives.
