Mithun Mela held at Pungro Village

A Mithun Mela was held on November 29 at Pungro village under Kiphire district, organized by the NRC Mithun, in collaboration with CVO Kiphire, KVK (ICAR) Kiphire and NEIDA. 

Gracing the Mithun Mela as guest of honour, Deputy Commissioner Kiphire, Mohammad Ali Shihab, in his speech said that Mithuns play an important role in the social cultural and economic lives of the local tribal population. 

He added that for the people who rear them, this animal is considered a sign of prosperity and of the superiority of an individual in society. The DC said that the Mithun was also known as the cattle of the mountain and was an important bovine species of the North East hill region of India. 

It is reared in free range areas along with biotic and abiotic stress, Shihab added. He encouraged the local people of Pungro area to preserve Mithuns for economic growth of the district.
