Mizoram becomes India’s first fully literate state; Nagaland ranks third

NEW DELHI, MAY 21 (NPN): In a landmark development for India’s education sector, Mizoram has been officially declared the country’s first fully literate state, achieving a total literacy rate of 98.2%, the highest in the nation.
According to the latest national literacy data for 2024, Nagaland has emerged as the third most literate state in India, with an impressive literacy rate of 95.7%, placing it just behind Lakshadweep (97.3%) and ahead of traditionally high-ranking Kerala (95.3%).Besides Mizoram and Nagaland, three other NE states (See table) have earned distinction by securing places in the Top 10 most literate states/UTs in India, underscoring the region’s growing emphasis on education. This achievement highlights the region’s commitment to empowering its people through education and sets an encouraging precedent for the rest of the country.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan congratulated the people and government of Mizoram for their historic achievement. “A momentous and proud milestone in the State’s educational journey and also a moment of great pride for the nation…,” Pradhan said in post on X.
