Aizawl, Oct 6 (PTI): Mizoram doctors have performed their first leadless pacemaker implantation in a state-run hospital here, Health Minister Lalrinpuii said on Tuesday.
The procedure was performed by a team of cardiologists led by Dr Loncy V. Lalzarliana and Dr Isak Lallawmkima under the guidance of Dr Uday Shankar Das of Apollo Multispeciality Hospital, Kolkata, at Aizawl Civil Hospital on Monday, she said.
The milestone came barely a year after a cardiac catherisation (Cath) laboratory was installed at the state’s largest civil hospital in 2025. Unlike conventional pacemakers, which require surgery to create a pocket beneath the skin and the placement of leads through blood vessels, the leadless device is implanted directly inside the heart through a catheter inserted via the femoral vein, Lalrinpuii said. The procedure does not require an incision for a pacemaker pocket or leads passing through blood vessels, making it a less invasive alternative, she said. While conventional pacemakers generally have a battery life of around nine to 11 years, the Abbott AVEIR VR leadless pacemaker is designed to last more than 18 to 21 years, she said. “The milestone is expected to strengthen the cardiac-care capabilities of Civil Hospital Aizawl and marks a significant step towards providing advanced heart treatment within Mizoram,” Lalrinpuii said in a social media post.
She said the patient, a 67-year-old pensioner, underwent the procedure under the Mizo Universal Health Care Scheme (MUHCS).
According to Dr Loncy, the leadless pacemaker implantation was the first of such procedures in the state, while conventional pacemaker implantations have been conducted on some occasions previousl
