Mizoram tops states in drug demand reduction efforts

AIZAWL, SEP 4 (PTI): Mizoram has ranked first among states in efforts to curb drug abuse under the Centre’s National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR), officials said on Friday.
The recognition was announced at a meeting chaired by the Union Social Justice and Empowerment Secretary on Thursday.
The National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction aims to prevent drug abuse, treat and rehabilitate users, strengthen treatment and rehabilitation services, build the capacity of personnel involved in drug-demand reduction and create awareness among children and youth.
Mizoram’s Social Welfare, Women and Child Development Department is the nodal agency for implementing the programme from the state level to districts and blocks.
Social Welfare Minister Lalrinpuii oversees the initiatives, while Deputy Commissioners lead district-level efforts.
The State Government has also partnered with churches and voluntary organisations to strengthen the campaign against drug abuse, with particular focus on protecting women and children. It submits regular implementation reports to the Union Ministry.
The Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA) is also being implemented across all districts under the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction.
Officials attributed Mizoram’s recognition to strong coordination among the State and district administrations, churches and voluntary organisations, which they said had significantly contributed to the State’s performance in drug demand reduction.
