M’laya CEO meets pol parties over SIR

CorrespondentSHILLONG, OCT 7

Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Dr. Brahma Deo Ram Tiwari on Tuesday held a meeting with political parties to discuss preparations for the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the State.
During the meeting, political parties were asked to appoint Booth Level Agents (BLAs) to assist the Booth Level Officers, verify the voter’s details and assist in mapping current constituencies.
He said the last special intensive revision was held in the year 2005 and this electoral roll will be the base year from which the new 2025 SIR will be carried out.
The last intensive revision of electoral roll in Meghalaya was published on April 15, 2005 with 13, 35, 816 electorates, including 6,71,510 female voters, the CEO said.
As on September, 2025, Tiwari said the total number of registered electorates in the State stands at 23,06,384, including 11,69,062 females and six third gender voters, marking a significant rise from 13,35,816 in 2005.
The CEO said four categories of voters would be mapped into four distinct categories based on their enrolment history and the documents required to prove citizenship.
He said Category A includes those whose names were on the 2005 voter list and need to submit the relevant part of that list along with an enumeration form.
Category B covers those not on the 2005 list but born in India before July 1, 1987, who must submit a self-document with the form. Category C consists of those born between July 1, 1987, and December 2, 2004, whose parents’ names are not on the 2005 list, requiring two documents: a self-document and one list, necessitating three documents: self, mother’s, and one from either parent,
While Category D includes those born after December 2, 2004, whose parents’ names are not on the 2005 list, necessitating three documents: self, mother’s, and father’s documents, Tiwari explained.
The CEO also informed that the Election Commission of India has accepted Aadhaar cards as valid identity proof for voter registration, following a Supreme Court directive. This is in addition to the existing 11 documents accepted for voter identification.
Furthermore, Tiwari reported that the total number of polling stations in the state, after rationalization, now stands at 3,615, marking a net increase of 64 polling stations. The next Meghalaya assembly election is scheduled to be held in February 2028 to elect all 60 members of the Meghalaya assembly.
