M’laya govt. orders BSF, police to beef security along India-B’desh border

CorrespondentSHILLONG, DEC 27

The Meghalaya government has directed the Border Security Force (BSF) and Meghalaya Police to further upscale their security measures and placed troops on high alert along the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya.
Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home, Prestone Tynsong said the fresh instruction was issued after four Bangladeshi criminals intruded into Indian territory and robbed residents of Umniuh Tmar, a border village in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district, on December 17.
The Bangladeshi criminals looted at gunpoint from the five Indian villagers, including four women. They robbed gold earrings, mobile phones, and tablets.
“We have asked the BSF and the State Police to keep an extra vigil along the international border to prevent Bangladeshi intruders from sneaking inside Meghalaya,” Tynsong said.
On the alleged Bangladeshi nationals crossing the international border in large numbers to steal agricultural produce and harass border residents, the Deputy Chief Minister said, “The Bangladeshi nationals are committing these illegal activities whenever BSF presence is not there.”
However, he said that State Director General of Police, Idashisha Nongrang and Inspector General of BSF, Meghalaya Frontier, OP Upadhayay are coordinating at their level to enhance border security measures and prevent illegal infiltration.
Meghalaya shares a 443km border with Bangladesh, of which 49.216 km is unfenced and has terrain difficult to patrol.
