A major tragedy was averted with timely detection of a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district on Saturday evening, police officials said on Sunday.
The IED, planted inside a bag, was found inside a compound located in front of the Meghalaya Rural Bank in the Umsning market at around 7.30 pm, Vivekanand Singh Rathore, the district police chief of Ri-Bhoi, said.
Simultaneously, the bomb detection and disposal squad (BDDS) and a K-9 team were requisitioned and, upon assessing the abandoned bag, they confirmed the presence of explosives. The IED was successfully diffused by BDDS.
“On analysis, it was found that the IED was made using 4.7 Kg Gelatine as an explosive, 10 detonators, and approximately 50 iron rod pieces as splinters,” Rathore said, adding that all the materials were seized at the place of occurrence as per standard operating procedures, taking all precautions.
There was no loss of life or property during the operation.
“One suspect has been identified and the team is on the job to arrest him,” Rathore said.
A case has been registered and further investigation is on, he said.
