A BJP legislator on Thursday said that if the Central government fails to form a popular government in Manipur within the current month, November, party MLAs will elect a leader and stake claim to form the government to the Governor.
MLA L Rameshwor hinted current Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly Th Satyabrata would be the new leader while responding to queries from the reporters on the sideline of an event in Thoubal district on Thursday.
Manipur Legislative Assembly is currently under suspended animation after the Centre imposed President’s Rule in February last.
The MLA representing Keirao Assembly Constituency of Imphal East district also cautioned that further delay in the installation of the popular government may increase the instability in the state.
Besides, the position of the BJP in the state will not be good if it fails to re-install the popular government by November, he said.
“If no elected government is installed within the current month –November – the party’s position will not be in good shape and Manipur could plunge into deeper chaos,” he warned.
The MLA asserted to serve the twin objective of saving the party (BJP) and serving the people, a group of BJP legislators were on active consideration on staking claim to form the new government.
While stressing the need for installing a popular government in the state, the MLA alleged that the state’s financial position is not in a good shape under the President’s Rule.
The state is now like a headless family. Despite having funds, development works, particularly road improvement works, remained halted. Even tenders for awarding contract works could not be floated under the PR administration, he alleged.
In such a situation, there is the urgency of installing an elected government in the state. Otherwise, the state’s situation would deteriorate further, he added.
Rameshwor revealed that some of the party MLAs had projected Speaker Th Satyabrata as the leader of the legislature party to head the proposed new government.
If the Central leaders did not take up steps to form the new government within the current month, the MLAs were ready to elect him (Th Satyabrata) as their leader.
“After then, we will submit a formal proposal to the Governor to form the new government,” he said.
The MLA further disclosed that some party Central leaders are likely to visit the state later this month to deliberate on the evolving political situation.
At the same time, the BJP MLA ruled for dissolving the State Assembly if no popular government is going to be installed.
“If the popular government is not going to form, the state Assembly should be dissolved to seek a fresh mandate from the people,” he said.
When asked on what the BJP MLAs are going to do if the Centre fails to form the popular government within the current month, the MLA responded indirectly saying that most of the party MLAs from both hills and valley are united in favour of the formation of the popular government.
There would be no problem in electing a new leader from among these likeminded MLAs and push for formation of the government, he added.
Rameshwor, while highlighting the ongoing turmoil, stressed the need for legislators’ to act decisively.
He said, “The state is enduring an unprecedented crisis and both citizens and legislators are under severe strain. In this situation, the people’s representatives must act decisively.”
Meanwhile, Speaker Th Satyabrata who also happened to attend the event said that it is up to the MLAs whether or not to stake a claim for government formation, when the reporters insisted for his comment.
