IMPHAL, Oct 19: Manipur chief minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Monday chaired a security meeting as the security situation in the restive state deteriorated following a fresh outbreak of violence.
At least four people have died in two separate violent incidents in the last 24 hours. Three of them were killed in an attack by suspected Kuki armed miscreants militants in the periphery of Imphal East district adjoining Kangpokpi today morning while the other one during a violent clash between two groups of people in Thoubal district last night
The violent incidents involving fatality, particularly the killing of three along Imphal East–Kangpokpi inter-district border triggered widespread protests as valley residents blamed killing them in renewed attack by the Kuki militants. The protests brought the state’s capital city, Imphal, to a near standstill. Angry protesters also placed two of the bodies outside the chief minister’s official residence in protest, which the police forcibly removed later. In the backdrop of fresh violent incidents that came up amid the escalating Naga-Kuki conflict in parts of the hill districts, chief minister Y Khemchand Singh reviewed the security situation during a high level meeting at the cabinet hall of the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Imphal this evening.
The meeting was attended by state home minister Govindas Konthoujam, the state chief secretary, security advisor; DGP, commissioner (Home), and high-ranking officers of the Army, Assam Rifles, CRPF, BSF and other security agencies.
While reviewing the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, the chief minister directed officials to strengthen security measures in vulnerable areas across the state, an official source said.
The chief minister also strongly condemned the killing of innocent civilians by armed miscreants in the periphery of Imphal East, the official source added.
“The meeting reviewed the overall security situation of the state and discussed yesterday’s unfortunate incident that occurred in Thoubal district and today’s incident in Imphal East” the chief minister’s office said in an official release.
Earlier in the day, Singh visited the injured and their family members of the Nongshum incident and met with the hospital authorities and instructed them to provide the best possible medical treatment to those injured. He also assured them that the government would bear all medical expenses for the injured civilians.
