IMPHAL, SEP 30 (NPN): Manipur chief minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Wednesday vowed to continue working towards overcoming differences and bringing the people together as the state paid rich homage to Hijam Irabot, the iconic people’s leader and pioneer of the revolutionary movement in Manipur, on his 130th birth anniversary.
“As the leader of the state, I cannot remain indifferent to the prevailing divisions. I will continue to work towards overcoming differences and bringing the people together,” Singh said in his address. Apart from the state‑level observance hosted by the government, various organisations, including political parties, also marked the day. Speaking at one of the events in Imphal, Singh noted that the state continued to face challenges due to the protracted violent crisis since May 3, 2023.
Reiterating his commitment to restore peace and normalcy, the chief minister stressed that the 36 communities of Manipur must live together as one. He emphasised the importance of collective efforts toward peace and harmony, while cautioning that certain individuals or groups were actively attempting to derail such efforts.
“Whenever peace begins to return to the state, there are always certain individuals or groups who attempt to disrupt the emerging peace and create disturbances,” Singh said, adding that those working against peace would eventually be exposed. He urged genuine peace‑seekers not to be deterred and to continue working collectively for lasting peace. Expressing confidence that Manipur would once again witness peace and prosperity, Singh called upon the people to contribute towards creating an environment conducive to unity and development.
Earlier in the day, the chief minister led floral tributes at the memorial of Jana Neta Hijam Irabot during the state‑level observance at Irawat Square, Lilashing Khongnangkhong, Imphal.
Singh described Irabot as a multifaceted personality who made significant contributions to social and political movements, literature, and journalism. “Irabot’s contribution to creating social awareness through his writings and journalistic activities remains an important part of his legacy,” he said. He recalled Irabot’s vision of harmony and peaceful coexistence among the hill and valley communities, stressing that his ideals of unity, social justice, and collective progress should continue to guide the people of Manipur.
Meanwhile, the Irabot Celebration Committee organised a function at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Palace Compound Imphal. Leaders of the CPI Manipur State Council described Irabot as the true leader of the masses who fought against the exploitative administrative system of his time, championed farmers’ rights, and worked for the emancipation of women.
They added that it was because of his selfless sacrifices that Manipur today stands with its territorial boundary intact.
