IMPHAL, Jun 24: Manipur government’s directorate of information and public relations (DIPR) on Wednesday organised a one-day workshop on the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism and media fact-checking.
The event held at the DIPR auditorium in Imphal brought together journalists, media professionals and government officials.
Addressing the event secretary (IPR) of the state government Hungyo Worshang said the rapid growth of social media and digital platforms has significantly changed the way news reaches the public.
“Although AI is increasingly being used in journalism, it should be viewed as a supportive tool rather than a replacement for journalists,” he said.
Worshang added that AI could assist media professionals in tasks such as data analysis, information verification and content processing.
However, the responsibility of ensuring the accuracy, credibility and authenticity of information ultimately lies with the journalists, he stressed.
He also cautioned that AI-generated content must be carefully analyzed and verified before being shared with the public.
IPR director Th Charanjeet Singh asserted that the workshop was being organized to enhance the knowledge and skills of journalists and concerned officials regarding emerging AI technologies.
He highlighted the growing challenges posed by misinformation, deep fakes and unverified content circulating online, underscoring the need for responsible use of AI in media.
Singh said, “AI is becoming an integral part of newsroom operations, helping journalists prepare reports, curate content and automate routine tasks.”
As information continues to be produced and distributed at an unprecedented pace, he emphasized the importance of staying updated with technological developments while maintaining professional standards of verification.
During the technical sessions, chairman-cum-managing director Haobam Joyremba Singh of Cube Ten Technologies Pvt Ltd, made his presentation on “AI: Myth and Reality” as resource person. He explained the fundamentals of AI and addressed common misconceptions about the technology.
Head of the department of computer science Hanjabam Saratchandra of Manipur Technical University spoke on the role of AI in journalism and the challenges of misinformation, focusing on responsible adoption of AI tools in news production and dissemination.
Academic head Angom Buboo Singh of NIELIT presented a session on AI-powered newsroom productivity and verification, demonstrating how AI-based tools can improve workflow efficiency and support fact-checking efforts.
The workshop concluded with discussions on the opportunities and challenges associated with the use of Artificial Intelligence in modern journalism and media practices.
