Mnp govt failed to resettle IDPs: State Congress chief

CorrespondentIMPHAL, Jan 30

Manipur Congress chief Keisham Megachandra on Friday criticized the state administration under President’s Rule alleging that the state government has repeatedly failed to ensure timely and dignified resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs).
The MPCC president’s allegation came barely a day after a state government statement on Thursday detailed a roadmap for the rehabilitation and resettlement of the IDPs while announcing the government’s target of resettling 10,000 IDP families comprising more than 40000 IDPs by March 2026.
In a post on his social media platforms, the MPCC president wrote, “The Government of Manipur has repeatedly failed to ensure timely and dignified resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), reflecting grave irresponsibility and continued neglect of the suffering people of the state.”
The sitting MLA of the currently under suspended animation Manipur Legislative Assembly alleged that despite repeated assurances, thousands of displaced families continue to live in uncertainty.
The prolonged delay in resettlement exposed the government’s lack of urgency and sensitivity towards the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Manipur, he added.
He stated that the chief secretary’s statement claimed that the government has been apprising the people of Manipur from time to time regarding the progress of IDP resettlement, but “the ground reality tells a different story.
Thousands of displaced persons continued to languish in relief camps without adequate facilities, security, livelihood support, or a clear roadmap for permanent rehabilitation, he went on to allege in the post. He added that announcements and targets alone cannot substitute concrete action and the people deserve transparency, accountability, and a time-bound resettlement plan that restores dignity and normalcy to the lives of IDPs.
“The continued neglect of this humanitarian responsibility is unacceptable, and the government must be held accountable for its repeated failure to protect and rehabilitate its own people,” he further wrote.
Notably, the Manipur government, in an official statement signed by the chief secretary on Thursday asserted that resettlement of 10,000 internally displaced families consisting of more than 40, 0000 IDPs would be completed by March 31, 2026.
The statement claimed that till date 16,500 IDPs have been resettled while asserting that the progress of the resettlement of IDPs was being informed to the people from time to time.
It stated that “The primary aim of the government is to gradually and securely rehabilitate IDPs, restore stable living conditions, and enable resumption of livelihoods, education and normal community life.”
The government’s vision extends beyond mere relocation of IDPs from camps to their homes with focus on livelihood, education and overall wellness of the IDPs, it added.
