Barely a day after BJP national general secretary (organization) BL Santosh’s assurance of the formation of popular government in Manipur at the earliest, state BJP legislators camping in New Delhi started returning to Imphal.
Of the 26 MLAs who camped in the national capital, at least five of them – Karam Shyam, Sapam Ranjan Singh, Heikham Dingo, Konthoujam Govindas, and Khumukcham Joykishan – returned to Imphal on Saturday.
Others, including Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata and former chief minister N Biren Singh ,are likely to return in the next two or three days, one of the MLAs who returned today hinted.
The BJP MLAs had gone to Delhi to meet party Central leaders and pressed for restoration of elected government in the state. The state is currently under President’s Rule with the state legislative Assembly under suspended animation.
The MLAs who returned to Imphal today expressed cautious optimism over the early formation of a popular government in the state.
Talking to the reporters on their arrival at Imphal airport, the MLAs claimed that the party Central leadership assured them of reinstallation of elected government in the state as soon as possible.
While the Central leaders did not specify a timeline for the formation of the government, the MLAs were confident of implementation of the assurance by the two Central leaders at the earliest.
MLA Karam Shyam said the latest discussions reflected a “visible concern and commitment” from the party’s Central leadership.
He said that earlier, the Central rarely mentioned the reinstatement of a popular government. However, this time, Sambit Patra and BL Santosh showed their clear interest in the matter.
“We are hopeful that an elected government will be formed soon,” he said.
Another MLA, Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh added that the MLAs’ key objective was to meet the party Central leaders and brief on the state’s political and security situation while pressuring them for early restoration of an elected government.
He added that during the meetings the MLAs briefed the Central leaders on the importance of installing a popular government in the state for stability and public trust.
“The discussions were positive and we expect a positive outcome soon,” he said.
Earlier, the MLAs sought to meet the BJP Central leaders like president JP Nadda, Union home minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, however, they were only able to meet BJP national general secretary (organization) BL Santosh and party north east coordinator Sambit Patra.
The news of MLAs returning to Imphal came after BL Santosh reportedly assured restoration of the popular government in the state at the earliest during a meeting on Friday.
