MNYO flays desecration of Church in Manipur

Manipur Naga Youth Organization (MNYO) has vehemently denounced the desecration of Govajang Church allegedly by valley-based armed volunteers and described the act as “sacrilegious” directly offending the Christian community.
In a press release, MNYO general secretary TP Dining stated that the behaviour was deeply saddening and unfortunate, adding that it has caused distress within the Christian community.

MNYO further expressed pain at “reprehensible acts” targeting religious institutions. The youth body stated that the incident at Govajang Church was a blatant violation of the fundamental principles of “religious freedom and coexistence.”

MNYO reminded that Manipur known for its rich diversity harbours a significant Christian population within the Meitei community. It said that such actions not only posed a threat to the social fabric, but also undermined the region’s longstanding tradition of harmonious coexistence.
MNYO said that the wanton destruction of religious institutions, irrespective of the faith they represent, cannot be justified.
“These actions only serve to deepen existing divisions and inflict profound wounds upon the community,” it stated.

Further, MNYO stated that the conflict was not a religious issue or fight, adding that it transcends religious boundaries and was an assault on the principles of peace and coexistence. MNYO has called upon all the parties involved in the conflict to exercise restraint and engage in peaceful dialogue for a resolution that respects the rights and dignity of every community.

MNYO also urged responsible authorities to swiftly investigate the incident, hold those responsible accountable, and implement concrete measures to prevent further acts of religious intolerance and violence.
