DIMAPUR: Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has launched the “Women for Trees” campaign under the AMRUT Mitra initiative, aimed at promoting climate resilience and increasing greenery in heat-affected urban areas.
The campaign will be carried out in collaboration with DAY-NULM and will be led by Self Help Group (SHG) women.
The initiative will take place in two phases:
- Phase I: Site Visits (May 21–23, 2025)
Over 50,000 SHG women will visit designated plantation sites, including Water Treatment Plants (WTPs), water bodies, parks, and government lands. These visits will help them understand urban greening strategies and prepare for the plantation drive. Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) will coordinate the visits and provide refreshments. - Phase II: Plantation Drive (June 5–August 31, 2025)
SHG women will actively plant trees at the selected sites starting from World Environment Day (June 5), continuing throughout the monsoon season until August 31, 2025.
MoHUA has therefore urged all States, UTs, and ULBs to follow branding, outreach, and documentation guidelines.
The SHGs will conduct site visits in Mokokchung (May 21), Phek (May 22), and Dimapur, Kiphire, Kohima, Longleng, Peren, Tuensang, Wokha, and Zunheboto (May 23, 2025).
The campaign is a major step toward combining environmental sustainability with women’s empowerment in urban India.
