‘Moment of Much-Needed Reset’: Lawmaker Sahney Commends PM Modi-Carney Meeting

Vikramjit Singh Sahney, a Member of Parliament from Punjab, has welcomed the recent agreement between Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to restore diplomatic representation by appointing new High Commissioners for both countries during the G7 Summit.

Calling it a “moment of much-needed reset,” Sahney expressed optimism that this positive development would significantly ease the difficulties faced by Indian citizens abroad. He highlighted the importance of improved visa services, especially for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), who have long awaited more efficient and timely processes to visit their families and homeland.

Highlighting the economic significance of this renewed engagement, Sahney pointed out that bilateral trade between India and Canada totaled over $8.2 billion in 2024, with Canadian investments in India surpassing $55 billion. He emphasized the ample opportunity to expand cooperation further.

“India relies on Canada for over 63 percent of its potash imports and is a major consumer of lentils and edible oils sourced from there. Restoring diplomatic normalcy can energize this economic corridor, benefiting both nations,” Sahney remarked.

The meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney took place on the sidelines of the G7 Summit at Kananaskis, Canada. It aimed at reviving strained bilateral ties.

India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri described the discussions as “very positive and constructive,” adding that both leaders agreed on “calibrated steps” to restore stability to their relationship.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Mark Carney held a positive and constructive meeting in Kananaskis. They emphasized the importance of the India-Canada relationship, which is founded on shared values, democracy, the rule of law, and people-to-people contacts,” Misri stated.

As an initial move, both leaders agreed to promptly restore High Commissioners to each other’s capitals. Further diplomatic steps are expected to follow to reinforce this renewed relationship.
