Monthly SIP Contributions Surge Nearly Tenfold in a Decade

New Delhi, June 13 (IANS): India’s systematic investment plan (SIP) ecosystem has witnessed remarkable growth over the past decade, with monthly SIP contributions rising nearly tenfold from Rs 3,189 crore in May 2016 to Rs 30,954 crore in May 2026, according to a report by ValueMetrics. The report noted that SIP investments have remained resilient despite major economic disruptions, including demonetisation, the Covid-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine conflict and global tariff-related uncertainties. Outstanding SIP accounts reached 1,047 lakh in May, marking a year-on-year increase of more than 15 per cent from 906 lakh accounts recorded in May 2025. While net new SIP additions recovered to 2.5 lakh during the month, new registrations stood at 54.2 lakh against 51.7 lakh discontinuations and tenure completions, indicating increased churn within the investor base. The mutual fund industry’s assets under management (AUM) stood at Rs 81.6 lakh crore at the end of May.

The report further highlighted that active equity mutual funds recorded gross inflows of Rs 57,604 crore during the month, while combined net inflows into active pure equity and hybrid funds stood at Rs 33,468 crore. Hybrid funds, excluding arbitrage funds, attracted net inflows of Rs 4,862 crore. Although gross SIP registrations remained healthy at 5.2 per cent of outstanding accounts, discontinuations at 5.0 per cent nearly matched fresh additions, reflecting growing account turnover. Gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs) witnessed net outflows of Rs 725 crore in May, reversing the strong inflow trend seen earlier in the year, while active equity funds recorded net inflows of Rs 22,908 crore. Despite market volatility, SIP contributions remained robust at Rs 30,954 crore, with SIP assets rising to Rs 17.12 lakh crore, underscoring sustained participation by retail investors in long-term wealth creation.
