More reports on observation of World Drug Day

Nagaland joined the world in observing “International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking” by raising awareness about the negative impact of stigma and discrimination on people who use drugs and their families on June 26. The day also envisaged to educate the people about drug use disorders, available treatments and the importance of early intervention and support.
The day was marked by conducting various activities across the state under the global theme, “People first: stop stigma and discrimination, strengthen prevention”.
Pfutsero Town: Department of Social Welfare in collaboration with Lightway Society Pfutsero observed the day on June 26 at Pfutsero Town with Medical Officer (MO), Community Health Centre (CHC) Pfutsero, Dr. Vepfuhu Kezo as the special guest.
Speaking on 2023 global theme, Dr. Kezo highlighted the gathering on the consequences which leads to dependency and to addiction. He said addiction was also like any other chronic disease for which early intervention was important.
In a short speech, DWO Phek, Anyile Khamo encouraged drug users to have a strong willpower to overcome dependency/addiction, which was affecting their normal life.
A short message and concluding remark were delivered by Vesusa PD, Lightway Society. The programme was earlier chaired by program manager, Angu-u, invocation was pronounced by Vesutsuyi and a special song was presented by Rukuve and Kuwe.
Mon: The “International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking” was jointly observed on June 26 by Shansham Organization Mon TI, Nagaland User’ Network (NUN), Mon Users’ Network (MUN), District AIDS Prevention & Control Unit (DAPCU), Department of Social Welfare, Mon and OST Centre, District Hospital (DH) Mon with the support from Nagaland State Aids Control Society (NSACS) at OST Chapel Hall Mon.
At the programme, short speeches were delivered by DPO, DAPCU, Longyim Tzudir, CDPO Tizit, Amilo Yanthan and Mon Town Student Union (MTSU) president, Honpho Konyak.
The gathering was also enlightened on the 2023 global theme by Longching Konyak. The programme was facilitated by ORW, Shansham Organisation, Wangai, invocation by Fellowship Pastor Tompang Ward Mon, Chenki, short poem on “drug Abuse” by PE, Shansham Organisation, Loa-o, and a special song by Manjon Konyak. The programme ended with vote of thanks by counsellor, OST Centre, Mon, Ingaupeule and an “addict prayed” by ORW, Shansham Organization, Manging.
DEF Wokha: In observance of the “International Day against Drugs Abuse and Illicit Trafficking”, District Executive Force (DEF) organised various activities across the district police stations.
According to a DIPR report, a drawing competition under 2023 global theme was conducted at Superintendent of Police (SP) Wokha office, which was participated by 52 students from different schools.
Speaking at the event, SP Wokha, Aotula T Imchen said it was the duty of every government, NGOs and local bodies to its citizens from threats of drugs abuse.
Imchen also said that it was the responsibility of public to support efforts to educate the youths about the dangers of drugs abuse and share information on any suspicious activities with concerned officers.
The competition held for juniors and senior categories were judged by ADC Wokha, Furhesie, DYRO, Libemo Jami and Sr. supervisor department of social welfare, Erenbeni as judges.
Meanwhile, different programmes were conducted at various the police stations under DEF Wokha to commemorate the day.
A seminar on drugs abuse was also conducted by Wokha women police station wherein the councillor interreacted with drug users.
An interactive session was organised by Bhandari police station with students of Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Bhandari while Ralan police station held an inclusive seminar on drugs abuse with the co-operation of the SDO (C) Ralan, Director Youth Welfare
Centre Dimapur, DBs, village council chairman and 7th NAP Bhandari. Police Station Changpang and police station Sanis also conducted various activities to commemorate the day.
DEF Kiphire: A rally was carried out by the officers and other ranks of District Executive Force (DEF) Kiphire at Kiphire Town to commemoration the “International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking”.
Speaking at the rally, Superintendent of Police (SP) Kiphire, K. Swarnambika said that the main purpose of the rally was to spread awareness to the public regarding the ill effects of drugs and illicit trafficking.
While addressing the police personnel, she stated that, while the primary duty of police was to enforce law, it was also their social and moral obligation to spread the message of overcoming the menace of drug abuse.
The SP said the police should display exemplary conviction in the fight against drugs by keeping oneself clean of anything related to drug abuse and illicit trafficking, and also by initiating the spread of awareness amongst family members and friends.
During the rally, pamphlets relating to narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances were distributed to the general public of the town.
