World Soil Day has been observed annually on December 5 to raise awareness of the value of good soil and to encourage the sustainable management of soil resources.
Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) in the state also organised the day by organising awareness programmes.
DoS&WC: Department of Soil & Water Conservation (DoS&WC) celebrated the day under the theme “Soils, where food begins”, on December 5 at Training & Research Centre, Sechu, Zubza. The programme was graced by secretary, Soil & Water Conservation Geology & Mining, K.Libanthung Lotha as the special guest.’In his speech, Lotha emphasized to commit and proactively work towards improving soil health. Director, S.K Hekshe in his opening remark stressed on stewardship to conserve the soil and mitigate the threats to soil. Theme speaker, Kevileto Rote, ARO elaborated on the theme and its aims to raise awareness of the importance of healthy soils for food production. Special invitee Tiayanger Jamir, SDO(C) congratulated and called on the department to continue to work for the people.
KVK Kohima: KVK (Farm Science Centre) Kohima, celebrated and observed the day under the theme: “Soil, where food begins” at Phenwhenyu Village Council hall with the participants from Guju and Phenwhenyu villages. The objective of the programme was to create awareness about the importance of nature soil and how to conserve and manage the soil for profitability in agriculture for future generation, stated principal scientist and head KVK Kohima, Dr. Ruokuovilie Mezhatsu.
The resource persons were Dr. Martina Shitiri, ACTO and Keviyieno Zhasa, Technical Officer. Demonstration of Agriculture Drone (Agribot) was carried out by Dr. Sesenlo Kath (Technical Officer).
KVK, NU: KVK, Nagaland University celebrated the day at Alaphumi village under the theme “Soil where food begins”. Dr. Visakho Shunyu CTO (Agronomy) chaired the programme and delivered the key note address. Dr. Kundan Kumar SMS (Agril Extension) delivered a speech on natural farming and the importance of preserving soil fertility.
