Union minister of state for steel and heavy industries Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma who arrived in Imphal on an official tour in Manipur on Friday visited Noney district.
Before inspecting the under construction railway’s tallest pier bridge (Bridge no. 164 of Jiribam-Tupul Railway project located in Noney district, the Union MoS reviewed developmental activities and implementation of Central schemes in the district.
Earlier, the Union minister’ helicopter landed at Longmai Common Ground at around 10 am. He was received by top officials of the district led by DC Vidyamari Sridhar and SP Namsadai Peter and other district administration officials. After a brief reception programme, Varma visited the Longmai Primary Health Centre, where he distributed Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana cards to four beneficiaries of the district. He also handed over house keys to beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin at Rangkhung region.
It was followed by inspection of the railway’s tallest pier bridge after which he further reviewed the progress of key infrastructure projects, including works undertaken by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited on NH-37 and development of a railway station Awangkhul village.
Subsequently, he chaired a review meeting at the DC’s office with district level officers from various line departments, including officials from the railways and NHIDCL, to assess implementation of Central sponsored schemes being implemented in the district.
Other issues concerning development in Noney were also discussed, officials said. During the meeting, departmental heads presented achievements and ongoing initiatives through presentations and highlighted challenges affecting development in the district, seeking support from the Union ministry to address existing gaps and bottlenecks. As part of his maiden visit to the district, the Union minister also planted saplings at the DC office complex and visited departmental stalls set up by forest, agriculture, rural development and panchayati raj, horticulture and other departments.
The Union minister arrived in Imphal on his official tour in the state on Thursday. On the first day of his visit, Verma met with state chief minister Y Khemchand Singh and discussed the industrial sector in the state. In a post on X after meeting, the chief minister wrote “the interaction was cordial, productive and forward-looking.”
“I highlighted Manipur’s immense potential in the heavy industry sector, which can significantly contribute to economic growth, industrial expansion, and large-scale employment generation in the state,” he further wrote. Reportedly, the Union minister also shared his valuable perspectives and assured continued support for strengthening the industrial ecosystem in the state.
