The Madhya Pradesh Assembly’s Monsoon Session faced repeated disruptions on its fifth day, leading Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar to adjourn proceedings twice before suspending the House until August 4. The uproar began when Tribal Affairs Minister Vijay Shah entered to answer departmental questions, prompting protests from Congress MLAs over his controversial remarks about Army officer Colonel Sofia Qureshi. Demands for Shah’s resignation escalated tensions between the Opposition and Treasury benches, with further provocation from Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya’s inflammatory comment likening Opposition rhetoric to “the language of Pakistan.”
Despite attempts to resume business, the session remained chaotic. Congress MLAs also protested over fertiliser shortages, part of a broader strategy to highlight agrarian distress and governance issues. BJP MLA Bhupendra Singh raised concerns about land encroachment in Sagar district, but discussions were overshadowed by the unrest. The session, running from July 28 to August 8, has seen over 3,000 questions and 226 attention motions submitted. Meanwhile, the Speaker’s ban on symbolic protests and sloganeering within the Assembly premises has drawn criticism from the Opposition, who accuse the government of suppressing dissent.
