Government Middle School (GMS) Lower Chandmari celebrated its Cultural Day on October 1st under the theme “Preserve Culture, Embrace Traditions”, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Naga people.
Kohimas hospital Managing Director and Experience the Naga Kitchen proprietor, Dr. Keneilhoulie Medom, who was the chief guest, stressed the importance of preserving Naga cultural identity through traditional songs, dances and practices.
Encouraging the students to dream big and work hard, Dr. Medom urged them to explore different avenues for livelihood while giving due importance to their studies. He also invited the students to perform at Experience the Naga Kitchen and informed that a Naga Kitchen folk group would be performing abroad to represent Naga culture.
He also highlighted the quality of teachers in government schools and encouraged students to make full use of the educational opportunities available to them. Kohima Municipal Council Counsellor K. Asangla, the guest of honour, stressed the importance of cultural identity and urged the students to remain connected to their roots and traditions.
Hoshito G.B. highlighted the school’s good enrolment and called for its upgradation. He also stressed the need for an approach road and standard steps to improve access to the school.
School Management Committee member Dr. Achila said culture helps people understand their identity and urged the students to trace their ancestral roots and carry the Naga identity forward with pride.
The programme began with a welcome song by the students, followed by a welcome address by Head Teacher Visa Nisa and an invocation led by Immanuel Baptist Church Pastor Zakiebaitu Metha. Students presented Konyak and Chang cultural dances, a Rengma lullaby, a poem recitation, and a solo performance followed by traditional competitions in Püxa Kuxuni (rhythmic jumping) and a war cry. School Management Committee Chairman John Kath concluded the event with a vote of thanks.
