Manipur chief minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Sunday said the main objective of his Jiribam tour was to strengthen the bond among different communities and restore peace in the state.
Singh embarked on a two-day visit in Jiribam, a Manipur’s district bordering south Assam, on Saturday. Concluding his visit to the border district, he reached election-bound Assam’s Cachar district on Sunday morning where he campaigned for the BJP candidate from Udharbond constituency. Before heading for Assam, the chief minister visited a site at Lakhipur village proposed for development of an Inter State Truck Terminus. Earlier, he planned to lay the foundation stone for the Inter-State Truck Terminus there. It was, however, abandoned following a dispute over the name of the site.
Instead, he attended a tree plantation campaign hosted by the forest department. Talking to the reporters on the sideline of the event, chief minister Y Khemchand Singh said his government’s main objective was to strengthen the bonding among different communities and restore peace in the state.
“Every community wants peace and we need to remove the trust deficit. My objective is to restore peace,” Singh told the media on the sideline of inspecting the site proposed for development of an Inter State Truck Terminus at Jiribam district.
He also expressed his government’s will to develop Jiribam into a model district.
Reiterating that Jiribam is the first district, where people representing all communities gathered and had lunch together, after the unprecedented crisis that had occurred following the May 3, 2023 incident, he termed it as a memorable one. Singh informed that he would look into the possibilities of taking up other tourism projects at the site of the Inter State Truck Terminus site in consultation with the town planning department, as the area of the site was large enough.
Regarding his visit to the district, the chief minister stated that his ongoing visit was the second, after becoming the chief minister of the state.. Earlier, the chief minister inspected the site for the proposed Inter-State Truck Terminus at Lakhipur where he undertook a comprehensive review of its existing infrastructure and operational systems. In a post on his Facebook page after the visit, Singh wrote that he closely examined the facilities to assess their readiness and identify areas for improvement, with a focus on enhancing efficiency and functionality.
“This terminus is pivotal for facilitating the seamless movement of goods across the region. I am confident that with strengthened operational efficiency and timely augmentation of infrastructure, it will significantly boost trade and logistics activities,” the post read. He hoped that the infrastructure will generate diversified employment opportunities and contribute to sustained economic growth, ensuring equitable and inclusive development for the district.
