KOHIMA, JUL 7 (NPN): Members of the Naga Club, led by president Kuolachalie Seyie, called on Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio at his residential complex on Tuesday to seek continued support for the construction of the proposed Naga Club building.
Submitting a letter of gratitude, Kuolachalie thanked the chief minister for his commitment to preserving Naga values and culture and for approving financial support for the project. He said the Naga Club embodied the history, traditions and spirit of the Naga people, particularly the culture of caring for one another without limits, even during the days of headhunting and inter village conflicts.
Recalling the club’s early contributions, Kuolachalie noted that it had established a free guest house in Kohima for Nagas travelling from distant villages. The guest house became a hub where visitors and locals built friendships through games such as chess, carrom and ludo, while reading newspapers together. Over time, these friendships grew into brotherhood, with many Nagas choosing to stay in the homes of their newfound friends instead of the guest house, creating bonds that extended across present day Nagaland.
Kuolachalie explained that the building project was delayed in 2025 as the club was unfamiliar with procedural requirements. The concept note was rejected thrice, with departments citing exhausted funds due to the prevailing war related situation. On the advice of architect Richard Belho, the club later revised its proposal, but by then funds had already been exhausted. He informed that the club is now awaiting support under the 16th Finance Commission.
Expressing optimism, Kuolachalie said the proposed building would serve as a symbol of Naga heritage and inspire future generations. He added that Er. Kezha Theünuo, CEO of Smart City, and architect Belho had agreed to execute the construction without charging professional fees.
In response, Neiphiu Rio assured the delegation of his support in pursuing the required funds for the project.
