Naga taxi driver attacked with dao in Jorhat: 1 held

DIMAPUR, JAN 9 (NPN)

Jorhat police have reportedly arrested one individual for allegedly attacking a Naga taxi driver with a machete at the Jorhat bypass highway on January 8, 2026.
According to Assam police sources, the accused has been taken into custody for further investigation.

The victim, a taxi driver carrying passengers from Kohima to Mon, suffered injuries and was immediately rushed to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital by locals.
Confirming the incident, police sources from Nagaland PHQ said Jorhat police officially informed Mokokchung police of the arrest, with further details awaited.
KU flays attack
Konyak Union (KU) has strongly condemned the “barbaric and inhuman incident,” in which one Nayanjyoti Saikia (38) allegedly attacked taxi driver Tahngom Konyak with a machete.
In a press release, KU president K. Yamao Konyak and general secretary Wango Konyak said the victim, the sole breadwinner for his family, was in critical condition. KU described the attack as a grave criminal offence and a blatant assault on human dignity, public safety, and the rule of law. The union expressed grave concern over growing violence and insecurity on national highways, which it said instilled fear among commuters.

The union lauded the Jorhat Superintendent of Police (SP), officer-in-charge, and team for prompt intervention, rescuing the passengers, ensuring their safe return to Mon, and apprehending the perpetrator.
KU has, however, demanded that the accused be booked under relevant laws and not released until justice was delivered. The union cautioned that any dilution of the crime would be seen as a failure of the justice system and an affront to the victim and Konyak community.
KU appealed to the people of Assam to uphold harmony and peaceful coexistence between the two states. It also urged the Assam government and law enforcement to strengthen highway security through round-the-clock patrolling to prevent criminal acts and safeguard commuters.
The union affirmed solidarity with the victim and his family, reiterating its commitment to justice, peace, and protection of fundamental rights.
