Nagaland: 1 held for alleged extortion attempt in Kohima

Kohima Police on December 8 apprehended a 71-year-old man for allegedly attempting to extort money from shopkeepers at P.R. Hill commercial area by claiming links to an underground organisation.
Police said credible information was received around 2 p.m. about a man demanding money from shopkeepers in the name of a purported underground group. Acting on the input, police teams carried out verification and ground assessment.
A duty personnel from South Police Station, assisted by the District Intelligence Branch (DIB), was dispatched to the spot, but the suspect had already left. Follow-up measures were initiated, including the deployment of plainclothes personnel and search operations.
On December 9, based on leads developed through sustained efforts, a joint team of South Police Station and the Anti-Extortion Team (South) apprehended the suspect near the Jack & Jill showroom at P.R. Hill.
The accused has been identified as Mathungo Ovung (71), who had allegedly claimed the self-styled designation of Dy. Kilonser, NNC/FGN. He is the son of late Etsonimo Ovung, hailing from Phiro village under Wokha district, and presently a resident of Lerie, Kohima.
Recovered items include Rs. 4,200 cash, one Vivo mobile phone, three demand slips purportedly belonging to FGN, and one white Maruti Ritz (NL 07 C 2974) with vehicle documents and ignition key.
Police said the accused has been taken into custody, and a suo motu case has been registered at South Police Station under South PS Case No. 0043/25. Further investigation is underway to determine any additional links or involvement in similar activities, police added.
