The 16th edition of the Jalukie Valley Open Football Tournament 2025, organised by the Jalukie Valley Youth Organisation (JVYO), kicked off at the local ground, Samziuram, with Additional Deputy Commissioner of Jalukie Sub-Division, Albert Ezung, gracing the occasion as special invitee.
In his address, Ezung formally declared Jalukie Valley as the “Land of Football”, describing the proclamation as a heartfelt tribute to the valley’s footballers. He lauded the natural athleticism of the Zeliangrong people and urged the youth to nurture their talents into skills that could also support livelihoods. Highlighting the government’s emphasis on sports development and the growing opportunities in the industry, he encouraged young players to make full use of available platforms. Noting that all 25 affiliated villages possess standard-size football grounds, he challenged the gathering to strive towards making Jalukie Valley not only the “Land of Football” but also the “Football Capital of Nagaland”.
JVYO president Masang, in his presidential address, expressed gratitude to the founding members for their vision of uniting the valley through sports. He emphasized the importance of cooperation and mutual support among communities, describing Jalukie Valley as one of the finest places of the Zeliangrong people. He also led a silent prayer in remembrance of pioneers and leaders who had passed away.
Former JVYO president Hainkieng underscored the historical significance of Samziuram as one of the oldest recognized villages in Nagaland. He urged the youth to prepare themselves mentally and physically, noting their role as future leaders of the Zeliangrong community. He added that the tournament’s timing was joyful, coinciding with the completion of the harvest season and the festive preparations. Chairman of Samziuram, NL Pame, described Jalukie Valley as a land of plenty and a conglomeration of the three Zeliangrong brothers, likening it to the biblical Canaan. He encouraged players to showcase and develop their God-given talents.
General Secretary of PDFA, Kengimpeuding Hegui, recalled Jalukie as the “Powerhouse of Football” and urged players to uphold the title in action. He encouraged them to give back to the sport by coaching or officiating even after retiring from active play, while congratulating JVYO for the continued growth of the tournament. The ceremony began with an invocation by Pastor of SDA Samziuram, GS James, followed by a welcome address from JVYO Advisor, Miucham Gonmei. The programme was compered by Haizeuyile Pame and featured a special song by Mayori Phinao.
A total of 16 teams from across the valley are participating in this year’s tournament. The oath-taking ceremony was led by secretary of Games & Sports, JVYO, Hiachanglak.
