The Wokha District Sepaktakraw Association (WDSA-Sepak) kicked off the 3rd Wokha District Inter-School Sepaktakraw Tournament at the public ground, Wokha, on November 11. The two-day event will conclude on November 12 with a closing ceremony and prize distribution.
The inaugural programme was graced by president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Wokha unit, Rhanbemo Odyuo, as the special guest. In his address, Odyuo commended WDSA-Sepak for its efforts in promoting the indigenous sport and producing state and national-level players within a short span of its establishment. He encouraged student athletes to participate with discipline and sportsmanship, urging them to aspire towards representing Nagaland and the nation. He also appealed to parents to support their children’s sporting interests, noting that sports foster unity, community pride, and self-reliance.
Odyuo further informed that the BJP Wokha unit will conduct the Sansad Khel Mahotsav on November 15 at the same venue, inviting students to take part in the one-day event.
Earlier, WDSA-Sepak president T. Thungchibemo Lotha, in his welcome address, highlighted the association’s achievements over the past four years, including sending young talents to state-level competitions.
He encouraged parents and schools to promote Sepaktakraw, stating that the sport offers strong prospects for rapid growth and national recognition.
The inaugural programme was chaired by Achanbeni Kikon, with Sr. Maria of St. Peter’s School, Longsa, offering the invocation. A special song was presented by Mhabeni Kikon of Mt. Sinai School, while the players’ oath was administered by vice president of WDSA-Sepak, T. Zuchanthung Ezung. The tournament was then formally declared open by the special guest.
Seven schools are participating in this year’s tournament, which will feature 30 matches across the U-14 and senior categories for both boys and girls under the Regu (three-a-side) format.
Chief of Team Metamorphosis (NGO) and Honorary Executive Member of WDSA-Sepak, Dr. Thungdemo Kyong, will attend the closing ceremony as guest of honour.
